📍 From Inside, United States
The Driskill is a historic hotel at Sixth and Brazos streets in downtown Austin, opened in 1886 by cattle baron Jesse Driskill. Its Romanesque Revival facade, with rounded arches, limestone trim and carved stone details, reflects the ambition and wealth of Texas’s cattle era. Inside, marble floors, ornate columns and a stained-glass dome extend the building’s elaborate visual character. The hotel also holds a place in Texas political history: Lyndon B. Johnson and Claudia “Lady Bird” Taylor had their first date here in 1934. From the street, the arched entrance and richly textured masonry provide a distinctive contrast to the glass towers of modern downtown Austin.
