The Cathedral of St. Simeon Stylite, located in Deir Semaan, Syria, is an astonishing Byzantine-era ruin and one of the oldest surviving examples of Byzantine church architecture. It was built in the 5th century to honor Saint Simeon Stylites, a Christian ascetic who spent 37 years on a small platform atop a pillar. For photo-travelers, capture the intricate details of the quadrilateral shaped basilica layout, and the central courtyard which features the remnants of the column where St. Simeon stood. The surrounding arched doorways, stone carvings, and spectacular views of the surrounding countryside offer excellent photo opportunities at different times of the day, particularly during the golden hour for dramatic lighting.
