The Byzantine Sigma
📍 Israel
The Byzantine Sigma is a semicircular plaza in the ruins of ancient Scythopolis, beside modern Beit She'an. Its name refers to the curved, or lunate, form of the Greek letter sigma. The plaza’s surviving stonework and the remains of rooms around its edge preserve the outline of a public gathering place in a city that flourished in the Byzantine period. Its broad arc stands out against the straight lines of the nearby colonnaded streets.
