The Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and St. Paul stands on Ostrów Tumski, Poznań’s historic Cathedral Island, between the Warta and Cybina rivers. Founded in 968, it is closely connected with the beginnings of the Polish state and is the burial place of Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave, Poland’s first king. Its red-brick Gothic character was restored after severe wartime damage in 1945; the twin-towered western façade remains a defining feature of the island’s skyline. Inside, the 19th-century Golden Chapel commemorates the two rulers with a monumental tomb and richly gilded, Byzantine-inspired decoration. The contrast between the exterior’s brickwork and pointed arches and the chapel’s gold surfaces gives the cathedral two distinctly different visual identities.
