The Teufelstatue is a bronze devil figure on Hexentanzplatz, a plateau above Thale and the dramatic Bode Gorge in the Harz Mountains. Its horns, cloven hooves and exaggerated expression embody the witches-and-devils imagery closely associated with the site, whose name means “Witches’ Dance Floor.” Hexentanzplatz is a major setting for the Harz region’s Walpurgis Night traditions, when folklore imagines witches gathering before May Day. The statue’s dark, weathered patina and theatrical pose make a striking foreground, while surrounding forest and glimpses across the gorge place the playful figure within the rugged landscape that shaped these legends.
