Tétouan, a bustling trading city in northern Morocco, is known for its lively souks, historic medina, and Andalusian-style architecture. Built in the 14th century, the old city is a warren of narrow cobblestone streets and exotic souks that offer lively, bargain-filled opportunities. One of the most visited sites in Tétouan is the Kasba Museum, a fortress built by Moulay Ismail in 1695. Once used as a prison, the mazelike structure is a strange mix of narrow passageways and quaint courtyards with a minaret tower on the roof. Another popular destination is the Dar El-Makhzen, an impressive palatial compound built in the 16th century. A short distance from the city is Cap Spartel, a dramatic headland and an important destination for bird-watchers.
