Templo del Gran Jaguar
📍 From Templo II, Guatemala
Templo del Gran Jaguar, also known as Temple I, is the steep Maya pyramid on the eastern side of Tikal’s Great Plaza, in Guatemala’s northern Petén region. Built in the eighth century as a funerary monument for the ruler Jasaw Chan K’awiil I, it marks the ceremonial heart of a city that was a major power in the Classic Maya world. Its nine stepped levels rise to a summit sanctuary crowned by a tall roof comb, an architectural feature that gives the temple its distinctive silhouette above the rainforest. Facing Temple II across the plaza, its central staircase and sharply stacked terraces create a striking contrast between monumental height and the broad, open ceremonial space below. Views from the plaza reveal both the pyramid’s geometry and the weathered limestone textures, with the North Acropolis adding context to the surrounding scene. Temple I itself is not open for climbing.
