The Templo de San Francisco Acatepec in San Andres Cholula is an incredible 18th-century Baroque-style church surrounded by an older, pre-Hispanic ruin. It features an impressive Neoclassic cupola and a bell tower with a height of about 40 meters (130 feet). The open courtyard inside is home to a lively cultural scene with marimba music, performances, and other events. Inside the church visitors will also find beautiful frescoes and artwork. The church also serves as a tribute to the local indigenous people as it stands near the site of a 16th-century Aztec temple. The neighboring town of San Andres Cholula is easy to access from the city of Puebla, which lies 40km to the northeast. The area is well-known for its UNESCO-listed archaeology and the Great Pyramid of Cholula, and visitors can enjoy wonderful views of the snow-capped Popocatepetl volcano.
