The Templo de las Inscripciones stands within the Maya city of Palenque, near Santa Cruz Uno in northern Chiapas. Rising above the site’s main plaza, the stepped limestone pyramid was built as the funerary monument of the seventh-century ruler K’inich Janaab’ Pakal, whose richly carved sarcophagus lies in a chamber deep inside. Its modern name comes from hieroglyphic tablets in the summit temple that record Palenque’s dynastic history. The broad central stairway, nine receding terraces, roof comb, and pale stone create a strong geometric profile against the surrounding rainforest, while humid air and shifting cloud often soften the background. The most recognizable view is from the plaza, where the pyramid’s scale can be read alongside the nearby palace complex.
