The Temple of Artemis rises above the ruins of Jerash, the Roman-era city of Gerasa in northern Jordan. Dedicated to the city’s patron goddess, the sanctuary occupied a prominent elevated terrace reached in antiquity by a monumental stairway and gateway from the main colonnaded street. Its most recognizable feature is the surviving row of tall Corinthian columns, whose finely carved capitals and warm limestone shafts convey the scale of the original complex. Framed against open sky, the columns create strong vertical rhythms, while views from the precinct extend across Jerash’s dense ensemble of streets, theaters, plazas, and temples. The site lies within the Jerash archaeological area, where the exposed stonework is especially defined by low, angled light.
