Constructed in the 6th century BC, the Tempio di Apollo (Apollonion) is among the oldest Greek temples in Sicily, standing as a testament to Siracusa’s ancient grandeur. Despite centuries of transformation—from a Byzantine church to an Islamic mosque and even a Spanish barracks—its remaining Doric columns and rectangular floor plan hint at its original splendor. Located at the entrance of Ortygia, the site is easily accessible and often part of a walking tour through Siracusa’s historical center. Stop by in the morning for fewer crowds, then continue exploring the picturesque streets and nearby archaeological sites. Photography is permitted, and there’s no admission fee, making it a perfect spot for a quick yet memorable cultural visit.
