Commissioned by Emperor Antoninus Pius in 141 AD to honor his wife Faustina, the temple stands within the Roman Forum, easily recognizable by its Corinthian columns of Cipollino marble. After Antoninus’s death, the Senate dedicated it to both him and Faustina, and centuries later it was transformed into the Church of San Lorenzo in Miranda. The surviving marble podium, imposing columns, and traces of rich decorations showcase its imperial grandeur. Near other notable ruins, it offers a glimpse into Rome’s transition from pagan rituals to Christian worship. Wear comfortable shoes and explore the Forum’s uneven terrain, and don’t forget to check opening hours for public access.
