Teatro Massimo is the largest theater in Italy and the third largest in Europe, located in the heart of Palermo. Founded in 1874 and opened in 1897, it stands no more than a stone's throw from the Cathedral of Palermo. Teatro Massimo features a neoclassical façade, and its coffered ceilings, gilded furnishings, statues and frescoes are some of the most breathtaking works of art in Italy. Travelers visiting Palermo have to include Teatro Massimo in their agenda; from musical performances to theatrical plays the Teatro Massimo is an experience like no other and it is certainly worth a visit.
