It was built in the 14th century by William Douglas, the 1st Earl of Douglas and the last great fortress to be constructed in Scotland. The castle is surrounded by a large curtain wall with numerous towers and a traditional gatehouse. Inside the curtain wall, visitors can view the keep, a large square tower, as well as part of the great hall and kitchens. The castle's impressive features include an extensively defended seaward entrance, a 40-ft high wall, and a series of impressive towers, defences and gateways. The views from Tantallon are breathtaking, looking out across the Firth of Forth towards Fife and off the east coast available.
