Tantallon Castle is a powerful medieval fortress located near North Berwick in East Lothian Council, United Kingdom. It was built in the 14th century by William Douglas, the 1st Earl of Douglas and the last great fortress to be constructed in Scotland. The castle is surrounded by a large curtain wall with numerous towers and a traditional gatehouse. Inside the curtain wall, visitors can view the keep, a large square tower, as well as part of the great hall and kitchens. The castle's impressive features include an extensively defended seaward entrance, a 40-ft high wall, and a series of impressive towers, defences and gateways. The views from Tantallon are breathtaking, looking out across the Firth of Forth towards Fife and off the east coast available. Tantallon Castle has survived the ravages of numerous sieges, storms, and centuries of neglect, and is now a place of historical interest, managed by Historic Environment Scotland.
