Tanah Lot Temple is one of the most important and well-known temples in Indonesia located atop a large rocky outcrop along the coastline of Beraban. The temple is said to be a part of the only remaining pilgrimage temple from the original 12 that dotted Bali's coastline centuries ago. The temple was built to honor the guardian spirits of the sea and the area is a popular spot for enjoying spectacular views at sunrise and sunset. Visitors to Tanah Lot also have the chance to spot wild monkeys and Bali silvery gibbon living amongst the cliffside setting. Visitors must take off their shoes before they enter the temple and must be careful not to step on anything sacred. Though visitors are not allowed to enter the main shrine, they are still able to explore the nearby temple walls and gardens. Tanah Lot provides a unique cultural experience and an opportunity to observe the unique Balinese Temple architecture.
