📍 Estonia
Tallinn’s Old Town is the medieval core of Estonia’s capital, divided between the limestone hill of Toompea and the lower town that grew around Baltic trade. Its narrow streets, merchant houses and Gothic town hall reflect the city’s importance in the Hanseatic trading network. Town Hall Square remains the central open space, enclosed by colorful façades and overlooked by the town hall’s slender tower. Surviving defensive walls and towers trace the old boundaries, while steep red-tiled roofs and church spires define the skyline. From Toompea’s Kohtuotsa and Patkuli viewing platforms, the lower town spreads toward the harbor, revealing how closely the fortified settlement was tied to the sea. At street level, cobbles, limestone masonry and tall gabled houses give the scene a more intimate scale. The historic center is inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
