Located in the city of Agra, Uttar Pradesh, the Taj Mahal was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and completed in 1653 as a monument to his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal. It is regarded as one of the greatest examples of Mughal architecture and is considered an architectural masterpiece. Heavily influenced by Persian and Indian architecture, the symmetrical white-marble mausoleum is set atop a raised platform and surrounded by beautiful gardens and pools. The intricate details include inlaid jewels, calligraphy, and Islamic-style arches and domes which reflect the country’s deep Islamic heritage.
