The Taj Mahal stands on the southern bank of the Yamuna River in Agra, at the heart of a monumental Mughal funerary complex. Commissioned in the 17th century by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal, the white-marble mausoleum combines Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural traditions. Its immense central dome, four minarets, arched façades and intricate floral inlay are organized around a strong axis through formal charbagh gardens and a reflecting pool. Red-sandstone buildings flank the tomb, sharpening the contrast with the marble and reinforcing the complex’s celebrated symmetry. From the garden, the classic view layers water, cypress-lined paths and the mausoleum; closer details reveal carved marble screens, calligraphy and pietra dura ornament. The stone’s appearance shifts with the light, while views from across the Yamuna place the monument within its riverfront setting.
