Taj Lake Palace occupies Jag Niwas, a small island in Lake Pichola at the heart of Udaipur. Built in the mid-18th century as a royal summer palace for Maharana Jagat Singh II, the white-marble complex is now a luxury hotel, its courtyards, domes, pavilions and carved screens preserving the visual language of Mewar court architecture. Seen across the water, it appears to float between the City Palace, surrounding hills and lakeside buildings; calm conditions produce striking reflections, while late-day light warms the marble against the darker Aravalli landscape. The palace also featured prominently in the James Bond film Octopussy. Access is by boat and is generally controlled for hotel guests and confirmed visitors, but broad views are available from Lake Pichola’s shores and boat routes.
