📍 From Jiaxing Street, Taiwan
Taipei 101 is a 508-meter skyscraper anchoring Taipei’s Xinyi District, a center of shopping, offices, and civic life. Completed in 2004, it held the title of the world’s tallest building until 2010. Its blue-green glass façade and tiered silhouette draw on bamboo and traditional pagodas, while eight stacked sections reflect the auspicious role of the number eight in Chinese culture. The narrowing tiers make the tower recognizable even when seen among Xinyi’s other high-rises. Inside, a huge suspended golden tuned mass damper, visible from the observatory levels, helps reduce the building’s movement in strong winds and earthquakes—an important response to Taiwan’s environmental conditions. Nearby Xiangshan, or Elephant Mountain, provides a view of the tower rising above the densely built Taipei basin, with the surrounding city giving a striking sense of its scale.
