The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is an iconic bridge between the two sides of Budapest, spanning the River Danube and connecting Buda with Pest. Constructed in 1849, it was the first permanent bridge between the two parts of the city and was designed by English engineer William Tierney Clark. At the time, it was one of the longest suspension bridges in the world - its central span is 227 metres. Today, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge is still the symbol of Budapest and it's no surprise that it's the most popular bridge in the city. Picturesque both in the day and at night, the bridge is illuminated and framed by the Matthias Church and Fisherman's Bastion on the Buda side. It's also a popular spot for tourists to board boats and take pleasure trips up and down the river.
