Swayambhunath is an important religious site in Kathmandu, Nepal. It is one of the four largest Buddhist religious sites in the Kathmandu Valley, and an iconic symbol of Nepal. The stupa is invested with its own spiritual energy, which pilgrims feel and sense as they approach the site. It is also known as the “Monkey Temple”, as there are large populations of sacred monkeys that live within and around the stupa. The stupa consists of a dome at the base, from which numerous stone steps lead up to a square platform. On top of the platform is a brick tower with various painted images and carved figures of Buddhist deities. It is a popular spot to see iconic views of the Kathmandu Valley, with the Himalayas in the distant backdrop. pilgrims come to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and stunning views. There are also 108 Buddhist prayer wheels located around the platform, which pilgrims rotate and pray in front of.
