Swansea Castle stands in the city centre, a compact medieval ruin surrounded by the modern streets and buildings of central Swansea. Established after the Norman conquest of Gower, it served as a stronghold and administrative centre in a region repeatedly contested by Norman lords and Welsh forces. The surviving masonry belongs largely to the later castle complex, with a crenellated wall and distinctive arcaded parapet forming its most recognizable features. From Castle Square, the weathered stone, narrow openings and battlements create a striking contrast with the glass, traffic and commercial life around them, while low side light brings out the rough textures and depth of the arches.
