Sustenpass is a 2,224-metre Alpine pass linking Innertkirchen in the Bernese Oberland with Wassen in the canton of Uri. The western approach climbs from the Hasli valley through forests and open high-country terrain before reaching a stark landscape of rock, snowfields and glacial water. Near the summit, views toward the Stein Glacier and surrounding peaks give the pass its most recognizable scale, while sweeping bends, stone-lined roads, tunnels and waterfalls create strong foregrounds for photography. Built in the mid-20th century, the road is also notable for how deliberately it frames the mountain scenery. Heavy snow normally keeps the pass closed in winter, so road status should be checked outside the main summer season.
