📍 From Inside, Finland
Suomen Kansallismuseo, the National Museum of Finland, stands on Mannerheimintie near Parliament House and Finlandia Hall in central Helsinki. Designed by Herman Gesellius, Armas Lindgren and Eliel Saarinen, the granite building opened as a museum in 1916 and is a landmark of Finnish National Romantic architecture. Its steep roofs, rough stone walls and tall tower borrow the visual language of medieval Finnish churches and castles, creating a distinctive silhouette along the broad boulevard. Inside, the collections trace Finland’s history from prehistory to the modern era, while the entrance hall features Kalevala-themed frescoes by Akseli Gallen-Kallela. The main building is currently closed for a major renovation and expansion, with reopening planned for 2027, but its textured façade and tower remain strong exterior subjects, especially when framed against Helsinki’s pale northern sky.
