📍 China
Suzhou Street is a reconstructed canal-side market beside the Rear Lake, on the northern side of Longevity Hill in Beijing’s Summer Palace. Its name and design evoke Suzhou and the waterside towns of Jiangnan, whose landscapes helped shape the Qing imperial gardens. Created for the imperial court to experience a staged version of southern Chinese market life, the original street was destroyed in 1860; today’s buildings are a later reconstruction. Traditional shopfronts, tiled roofs, stone bridges and narrow walkways line the water, creating a tightly framed townscape rather than the open vistas found elsewhere in the palace grounds. Views from the bridges reveal the relationship between canal and architecture, while reflections repeat the rooflines and surrounding trees.
