Angkor Wat is one of the most remarkable and enduring symbols of Cambodia. Located in Northern Cambodia, it is the largest religious monument in the world and one of the most important archaeological sites of Southeast Asia. Once the capital of the Khmer Empire, the temple complex, surrounded by a massive moat, a network of roads, and scores of other temples, was built in the 12th century, and is believed to be the world's largest pre-industrial city. Some of the most popular structures are the Bayon, Baphuon, Ta Prohm, and Angkor Thom. Most of these are decorated with intricately carved reliefs depicting each of the cultures and religions that once populated the area. Angkor Wat is a must-see when visiting Cambodia, and it’s best to arrive early to avoid the crowds and get the most out of your visit.
