Strandarkirkja
📍 Iceland
Strandarkirkja is a small Lutheran church in Selvogur, on the exposed south coast of Ölfus. The present white timber building dates from 1888, while the site has roots in Iceland’s medieval Christian history. Known as the “Miracle Church,” it has long been associated with vows and donations from seafarers, reflecting the dangers of the nearby Atlantic coast. Its red roof, compact steeple and enclosed churchyard stand in striking isolation against dark lava terrain, low vegetation and an expansive sky. Nearby, the sculpture Landsýn, meaning “Land in Sight,” reinforces the church’s close connection with sailors and the sea.
