Stone Town is the historic core of Zanzibar City on the western shore of Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it reflects centuries of Indian Ocean trade and the intertwined influence of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European communities. Its dense lanes pass coral-stone buildings with lime-plastered walls, shaded balconies, inner courtyards and elaborately carved wooden doors, many marked by brass studs and symbolic motifs. For photographs, the most distinctive scenes come from the contrast between bright tropical light and narrow, shadowed alleys, while the waterfront opens to broader views of the harbor, dhows and landmark buildings such as the Old Fort. Stone Town remains a lived-in neighborhood of homes, shops and mosques, so discretion when photographing residents and respect near places of worship are important.
