Stichting Drijf is a local cultural foundation in Lelystad that harnesses the city’s relationship with water to create public art, temporary floating installations and community events that activate the waterfront. Important for its role in connecting contemporary art, local makers and recreational waterfront life, the foundation uses floating platforms, barges and shore-based programming to stage performances, exhibitions and workshops that respond to Flevoland’s man-made landscape and maritime heritage.
Its concept is rooted in the region’s reclamation history—Lelystad itself being built on reclaimed land—so Drijf’s projects often reflect themes of water, land, climate and mobility. Architecturally and technically notable are the lightweight, modular floating structures and converted barges the foundation employs: adaptable platforms designed for safe public access, with simple rigging and weatherproofing that allow a range of artistic and community uses. Unique to Stichting Drijf are site-specific floating art pieces and occasional synchronized waterfront festivals that transform quays and marinas into temporary cultural venues, making it a distinct node where contemporary culture meets Lelystad’s aquatic identity.
