Stele della Madonna della Lettera
📍 From Santuario Parrocchia S.Maria Di Montalto, Italy
Rising majestically at the entrance to the port, the towering Stele della Madonna della Lettera is one of Messina’s most emblematic landmarks. Built in 1934, it honors the city’s patron saint, the Virgin Mary. A golden statue stands atop, symbolizing her protective blessing over the region. Visible from many vantage points along the harbor, the monument can be reached via a short stroll from nearby Piazza Duomo. The inscription at the base references Mary’s letter, said to have been delivered to Messina’s inhabitants centuries ago, pledging her eternal protection. Visitors can admire the panoramic views of the harbor and the Strait of Messina, making it a must-see stop for any traveler.
