📍 Germany
The steep Baltic cliffs at Cape Arkona rise near Putgarten on the Wittow peninsula in northern Rügen. Pale chalk and darker glacial deposits reveal the coast’s geological layers, while erosion continually reshapes the headland. Above the cliffs stand two historic lighthouses and the surviving earthworks of Jaromarsburg, a Slavic stronghold and religious center conquered by the Danes in 1168. Together, these landmarks connect the cape’s maritime identity with Rügen’s pre-Christian past. Along the shore, fallen boulders and narrow strips of beach emphasize the height of the cliffs; viewed from above, the coastline’s curves lead the eye toward the open Baltic. The contrast between light-colored rock, green cliff tops and the changing color of the sea gives the landscape its distinctive visual character.
