The colossal equestrian statue of Alexander the Great is definitely one of the most recognizable landmarks in Skopje, North Macedonia. Located in the eponymous Central Square, the statue was dedicated to the city in 2011 as part of a controversial series of renovations that significantly altered the city’s architectural landscape. Overlooking the main square, the main statue itself stands over 25 feet tall, with the horse typically standing at an impressive height of ten feet. With figures of Nike and Alexander on the same base and four additional stone figures around the base, the overall effect is breathtakingly grand. Though designed to capture Alexander’s spirit, the statue has its critics who see it as part of a larger campaign of cultural homogenisation by the previous ruling party. However, whatever one’s political sentiments, it’s hard to deny that this statue is a sight not to be missed by any visitor to Skopje.
