📍 France
The Statue de Saint Roch is a Catholic monument located in the old town of Pézenas in the South of France. It was built in 1659, to commemorate Saint Roch's victory over an outbreak of plague in the city. It is set up on a small square, and it is made up of a tall, slender Doric column like structure with a statue of Saint Roch, looking up to the sky with his hands and staff. Saint Roch is one of the most venerated saints in Catholic Christianity and is symbolized by a pilgrim, carrying a staff and a gourd of water. Beside the statue there is a plaque with an inscription with the words "Quid non mortalia pectora cogis, Auri sacra fames" ("What force dost not compel the hearts of mortals, thou cursed hunger for gold"). Visiting the Statue de Saint Roch in Pézenas is an interesting experience, where you can learn about the local culture and enjoy the beautiful view of the old cobbled streets and the picturesque architecture of the town.
