Madame Chapeau stands at the corner of Rue du Midi and Rue des Moineaux in central Brussels, a bronze street sculpture by Belgian artist Tom Frantzen. It portrays a character from the Brussels comedy Bossemans et Coppenolle, linking the city’s public art to its popular theatre and distinctive local speech. Her rounded hat and absorbed, coin-counting pose turn an everyday gesture into a small piece of street theatre. Set at pavement level rather than raised on a monumental plinth, she shares the scene with passing pedestrians and shopfronts, giving photographs both a human scale and the humor of a fictional resident mingling with the real city.
