Colmar’s Statue de la Liberté is a 12-metre replica standing on a roundabout at the city’s northern entrance. Installed in 2004 to mark the centenary of sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi’s death, it recalls that the creator of New York’s Statue of Liberty was born in Colmar. The raised torch, seven-pointed crown and oxidized-copper coloring form a striking silhouette above the surrounding roads, making the monument an unexpected modern gateway to the historic Alsatian city. As it occupies the center of a busy traffic circle, it is best viewed and photographed from a safe position outside the roadway.
