Stary Rynek
📍 Poland
Stary Rynek, Poznań’s Old Market Square, anchors the city’s medieval centre west of the Warta River. Laid out in the 13th century, it has townhouses lining its edges and a central cluster of historic civic and commercial buildings. Its landmark is the Renaissance Town Hall, whose arcaded façade and slender tower reflect the influence of Italian architecture in Poland. At noon, two mechanical goats emerge above the clock and butt heads, a familiar symbol of Poznań. Beside the hall, the narrow, brightly painted Merchant Houses retain arcades connected with the square’s trading past. Many surrounding buildings were reconstructed after destruction during the Second World War. The contrast between the Merchant Houses’ compact, colorful façades and the Town Hall’s monumental frontage gives the square its distinctive visual scale, while streets opening at its edges preserve the geometry of the medieval plan.
