St. Wolfgang’s Church stands beside the Klingentor on the northern edge of Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s old town, where it forms part of the medieval fortifications. Built in the late 15th century by the local shepherds’ brotherhood, it is also known as the Shepherds’ Church. Its unusual design combines a Gothic place of worship with defensive features, including thick masonry, embrasures and fortified lower spaces. From the wall approach, the compact stone church, gate tower and adjoining ramparts create a distinctive layered view, while narrow openings and weathered surfaces reveal how closely religious and military architecture were intertwined in the town.
