St. Stephen's Cathedral, or Stephansdom in German, is the most iconic landmark of Wien (Vienna in English) and Austria as a whole. This gothic Roman Catholic cathedral, dedicated to the nation’s patron saint St. Stephen, has become a symbol of the country. Located at Stephansplatz, it belonged to the former city fortifications and has been when for centuries. The colourful stained glass windows and sharp towers of the cathedral are particularly stunning and the cathedral interior is equally impressive. The crypt contains the tombs of 12 Austrian kings and those of the Babenberger rulers and the Ringstrasse are nearby. There are wonderful views from the south tower, and lifts make it easy to reach. Guided tours of the cathedral and the tower are a must for all visiting Wien.
