St. Stephan’s Cathedral rises above Passau’s old town on the peninsula between the Danube and Inn. Rebuilt in the Italian Baroque style after the devastating fire of 1662, it retains Gothic architecture at its eastern end, making the building a visible record of different periods in the city’s history. Twin towers capped with green domes frame the pale façade overlooking Domplatz. Inside, elaborate white stuccowork surrounds colorful ceiling frescoes, while repeated arches draw the eye along the nave toward the high altar. This contrast between the restrained exterior and richly decorated interior is central to the cathedral’s visual character. The monumental pipe organ above the western entrance is another defining feature, linking the architecture to Passau’s celebrated tradition of cathedral music.
