The impressive St Pierre Cathedral is located in the center of Geneva, Switzerland. Dedicated to St. Pierre, the patron saint of Geneva, the cathedral for centuries has been the main and only church of the city. The first wooden structure on the site being built as early as the fourth century. The basement of the cathedral dates from the early fifth century. The present building, made from local limestone, was built in the early to mid 16th century and was significantly remodeled in the late 18th century without damaging the original structure. Visitors should note the Baroque style, gilded organ and elaborate frescoed ceiling. The large portal on the front of the cathedral is especially worth noting. Make sure to look for the astronomical clock built in 1852,with twelve dials and depicting the position of the seven planets. The cathedral is a must-see when visiting Geneva!
