St. Peter's Square, located in Vatican City, is an impressive open-air plaza encircled by a colonnade of 284 Doric columns. This breathtaking sight often boasts a large gathering of tourists standing in awe of the great Baroque architecture as the Pope delivers his sermons from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica. Major attractions in the square include the obelisk, the Egyptian obelisk taken from the Temple of Isis in Rome and the impressive Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi in the center. The square was previously part of the famous Circus of Nero, a famous chariot race track in the ancient city of Rome.
