St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church
📍 United States
St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Juneau, United States is the capital city of Alaska and the oldest Russian Orthodox Church in the United States. It is a stunning example of Russian religious architecture and a stunning sight in the Alaskan landscape. This single-altar wooden Orthodox Church was built in 1895 and both the interior and exterior are amazing. There is a large representation of traditional Russian painting and church art. Inside, you'll find a beautiful 18th century iconostasis, which was brought over from the Russian Empire by Reverend Innocent Veniaminov, who was a missionary and the first bishop of the Kodiak Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. Outside, don’t miss the beautiful bell tower with its classic onion domes and ornate gingerbread style architecture. St Nicholas Church is definitely a must-see and a fantastic reminder of Alaska’s Russian heritage!
