St. Mary's Lighthouse is a popular attraction in Tyne and Wear, in the north-east of England. Located in Whitley Bay, the lighthouse stands on a 4-acre (1.6-hectare) site with coastal views and a great deal of history. Built in 1898 on a small island measuring 150 meters in diameter, the lighthouse itself is a 49-meter tall Victorian structure. The upper third of the tower is open to visitors and offers a bird's-eye view of the coastline.

The St. Mary's Island area around the lighthouse is accessible by a footbridge, which is bordered by two small pools that once served as the foundation for two fortifications. Explore the ruins of the old defenses and wander among the sand dunes and grassy clifftops. Climb to the top of St. Mary's Lighthouse to take in unspoiled views of the North Sea and the Isle of Man. From this vantage point you may be able to spot some of the seabird colonies that dot the coast. Finish your visit walking or cycling through the nearby Walton Nature Reserve.
