St Mary’s Church, or St Mary the Virgin, stands near the eastern end of Marlborough’s unusually broad High Street, anchoring the older streets that climb behind the town centre. The Anglican parish church has medieval origins, but much of its present character reflects rebuilding after Marlborough’s destructive fire of 1653, creating a layered mix of surviving medieval masonry and later work. Its square tower is the strongest visual feature, rising above the close-set roofs and contrasting with the High Street’s predominantly Georgian frontages. Views from the lower end of the High Street place the church within Marlborough’s historic townscape, while closer compositions emphasize weathered stone, buttresses and the compact churchyard setting.
