St. Landry Catholic Church Cemetery in Opelousas is the burial ground serving one of the region’s oldest Catholic parishes, reflecting the layered cultural and religious history of central Louisiana. Its significance lies in the concentration of generational parish plots and funerary art that document Creole, French, Anglo-American and African-American ties to St. Landry Parish; many headstones and family vaults date from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Historically, the cemetery grew alongside the parish after parish organization in the early 1800s, preserving inscriptions that illuminate local settlement, epidemics, and the parish’s role as a community anchor.

Architecturally the grounds are notable for vernacular Louisiana burial forms: above-ground tombs and family mausoleums adapted to the region’s water table, wrought-iron fences, carved marble and sandstone markers, and traditional Catholic iconography—crosses, angels, and saintly reliefs—visible throughout. Unique local practices persist here, including parish-led All Saints/All Souls commemorations and maintained family plots with dated ironwork and carved Creole lettering that are distinctive to Opelousas’s Catholic funerary landscape.
