St Jean Pied de Port is a beautiful village in the French Basque Country. Dating back to the 10th century, it has been the traditional entrance point to Santiago de Compostela for pilgrims following the Camino route. At the entrance of the village you can find the imposing impressive Saint-Jacques Gate and adjacent ramparts. With its picturesque cobblestone streets lined with shops and pubs, the old quarter is best explored on foot. Don’t forget to walk on top of the ramparts for lovely views of the nearby river and the picture perfect countryside. There are also lots of statues, little churches and interesting old buildings to admire. The village chapel and monastery are well worth visiting and the City Museum is a great place to learn about its history. The village is home to old wineries and cellars, as well as some delicious festive gastronomy including delicious local snacks and Basque specialties. There are also art and design stores, along with local artists and arts workshops that are worth exploring. With its unique atmosphere, the village of St. Jean Pied de Port offers plenty of opportunities for a memorable cultural experience.
