📍 United States
St. George’s School Chapel stands on the school’s hilltop campus in Middletown, Rhode Island, overlooking the Atlantic coast near Newport and Second Beach. Completed in 1928 to a design by Ralph Adams Cram, it is a Gothic Revival building whose stone walls, buttresses and pointed arches evoke the collegiate churches of England. That architectural language reflects the boarding school’s Episcopal heritage, giving the chapel a cultural role beyond its prominence in the coastal landscape. Its tower and steep roofline form a distinctive silhouette above the broad campus lawns, where the open setting makes the building’s scale easy to appreciate. Inside, stained glass introduces rich color and intricate detail in contrast to the solid masonry outside.
