Spruce Tree House is a 13th-century Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwelling sheltered in a sandstone alcove below the Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum in Mesa Verde National Park, southwestern Colorado. Its approximately 130 rooms and eight kivas, circular spaces used for ceremonies and community gatherings, reveal the scale and organization of a settlement built into the cliff. Pale sandstone masonry, small doorways, and stacked rooms stand against the deep shade of the overhang, making the relationship between architecture and geology especially visible. Trees along the canyon soften the edges of the stone complex without obscuring its distinctive alcove setting. Rockfall concerns have closed the dwelling to entry, but nearby overlooks provide views across the canyon into the site.
