📍 United Kingdom
The Spirella Building on Bridge Road is a former corset factory near Letchworth Garden City’s railway station in Hertfordshire. Built in stages between 1912 and 1920 to designs by Cecil Hignett, it gives architectural form to the garden-city ideal of placing industry in attractive surroundings while improving workers’ conditions. Its Arts and Crafts character, pale façades, prominent rooflines and repeated window bays distinguish it from a conventional industrial building. Known as the “Factory of Beauty,” Spirella provided recreational facilities for its workforce, including a ballroom. The building’s broad frontage and landscaped setting make its scale especially legible in photographs, while the windows create a strong rhythm across the exterior. Today it houses offices, and the restored ballroom remains an events venue, preserving a distinctive link between manufacturing and social life in the planned town.
